What Is Softshell Fabric Used For?
A practical look at softshell construction, garment uses and the questions buyers should ask before sampling.
What softshell fabric is
Softshell is a broad commercial term for woven, bonded or laminated fabrics designed to balance comfort, movement and weather resistance. Many constructions combine a stretch woven face with a knit or fleece back; others add a membrane between layers.
Common applications
Softshell fabric is widely used for hiking jackets, ski mid-layers, hunting apparel, outdoor workwear and winter trousers. The right structure depends on whether warmth, stretch, wind resistance or lighter weight is the main priority.
What to confirm with a supplier
Ask for the face and backing composition, total weight, width, number of layers, membrane type, stretch direction and available finishing. Waterproof and breathability values should only be stated when supported by testing for that exact construction.
Discuss your actual fabric brief.
